Former Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin received a 60-day jail sentence from a Jefferson County judge on Tuesday after being held in contempt for failing to provide financial records in a legal dispute with his estranged son.
“Your arrest warrant will be issued today,” said Jefferson Family Court Judge Angela Johnson during a hearing Tuesday, according to the Kentucky Lantern.
The judge had ordered Bevin to appear in person, but he joined the hearing via Zoom instead. He told the court he was traveling back to Kentucky after attending the funeral of his ex-wife Glenna Bevin’s father in Oklahoma. He did not reveal his exact location.
Judge Johnson issued a contempt order last week after Bevin missed a court-imposed deadline to submit his financial information. The dispute arose from Jonah Bevin’s involvement in the Bevins’ divorce case, as their adopted son seeks financial support.
Johnson said Bevin can still avoid serving the jail sentence if he submits the required financial records, including tax returns, bank statements, and details of all assets and income.
Jonah Bevin claims his parents abandoned him at a controversial and abusive facility in Jamaica when he was 17.
On Monday, Matt Bevin filed a motion with the chief justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court, requesting that Johnson be removed from the case. He alleged she showed bias against him and was “using me as a political pinata.”
The court has not yet posted copies of the judge’s order or the arrest warrant online.
Bevin, a Republican, won the governor’s office in 2015 and served one term before losing narrowly in 2019 to current Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear.
