The National Weather Service has confirmed that at least three tornadoes touched down in Kentucky during a severe weather outbreak that unfolded overnight. The storms moved through areas along the Southern Indiana and Northern Kentucky border from late Sunday, June 21, into early Monday.
According to the NWS, several lines of thunderstorms and supercell storms triggered tornadoes and flash flooding across the region. Two of the confirmed tornadoes touched down in Breckinridge County, while a third struck Hancock County.
The NWS also said weather survey teams will assess storm damage in Meade County on Tuesday. So far, surveyors have confirmed 22 tornadoes linked to the severe weather outbreak across Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky.
Breckinridge County tornadoes
The first tornado to strike Breckinridge County touched down near Heckman Lane at 11:07 p.m. local time. The NWS said the brief tornado overturned an unoccupied mobile home and caused damage to trees.
Officials estimated peak wind speeds at 85 mph, making it an EF-0 tornado on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. The tornado remained on the ground for about three minutes, traveled nearly 1 mile, and reached a maximum width of about 50 yards.
A second tornado, rated EF-1, touched down at 11:14 p.m. local time along Parr Road. According to the NWS, the tornado destroyed a shed, a large workshop, and a dwelling space near County Road 2780. It also caused damage to trees.
The NWS estimated the tornado’s peak wind speeds at 100 mph, with a maximum width of 70 yards. It traveled 1.15 miles before lifting three minutes after touching down.
The NWS reported no injuries or fatalities from either tornado.
Hancock County tornado
The tornado in Hancock County touched down at 11:44 p.m. local time east of Hawesville, near Highways 60 and 3199. The NWS said the EF-0 tornado traveled 3.49 miles and produced estimated peak wind speeds of 85 mph.
The tornado moved east along the Ohio River, damaging trees along Wescor Road. It remained on the ground for about 10 minutes before lifting and reached an estimated maximum width of 100 yards.
According to the NWS, no injuries or fatalities were reported.
