12 people charged in alleged drug ring run from inside prison by Indiana inmate

A recent federal indictment has charged twelve suspects with their alleged roles in a large-scale central Indiana narcotics conspiracy that a local inmate allegedly ran from within jail.

The business allegedly included the distribution of methamphetamine, cocaine, fentanyl, and other narcotics throughout the Indianapolis area. The ring was allegedly run by Justin Veal, a 37-year-old inmate at the Westville Correctional Facility who coordinated sales from behind bars.

The federal indictment describes how Veal’s operation distributed “hundreds of pounds” of opioids throughout southern Indiana.

According to investigators, suspects Sade Butler of Indianapolis and Shawnlisa Nevels of Fort Wayne obtained meth, cocaine, Suboxone, and fentanyl under Veal’s orders. Butler and Nevels then allegedly sold the pills in Anderson, Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and other locations.

During the investigation into alleged narcotics trafficking, police reportedly seized the following:

  • 13 guns, including some with drug magazines
  • 130 pounds of methamphetamine
  • 550 grams of cocaine
  • 241 grams of fentanyl
  • 25 Suboxone strips
  • 1,750 grams of synthetic cannabis, or “spice”
  • Thousands of counterfeit fentanyl pills
  • An unspecified amount of heroin
  • An unspecified amount of cash
  • A pill press with drug residue
  • High-value jewelry
  • 15 cell phones
  • 2 vehicles

The case was investigated by the Crossroads Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF) and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Lindsay Karwoski and Patrick Gibson.
