LOUISVILLE, Ky. – With snow showers and freezing air moving across Kentucky this month, officials are warning drivers in Louisville, Lexington, and Bowling Green to stay alert as bridges and overpasses begin icing over faster than main roads.
The National Weather Service (NWS) explained that bridges freeze first because cold air surrounds them on all sides, allowing heat to escape more quickly than from ground-level roads. “Even if the air temperature is just above freezing, bridges can already be slick,” the NWS said Friday.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has started pre-treating major routes — including I-64, I-65, and I-75 — as temperatures fall. Crews are focusing on high-risk areas like bridges, ramps, and overpasses where black ice can form quickly.
Officials urge motorists to slow down before crossing bridges, avoid sudden braking or acceleration, and keep extra space between vehicles. Even a thin layer of frost or sleet can cause vehicles to lose traction, particularly during early morning or late-night commutes.
