Flood Watch issued for Rhode Island And Connecticut, parts of Massachusetts as up to 6 inches of rain forecast

Downpours may cause flooding in southern New England in the coming days.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston, flash flooding due to excessive rainfall is possible, prompting a flood watch from 2:00 a.m. Monday through Tuesday afternoon for Rhode Island, Connecticut, and portions of southeastern Massachusetts, including Fall River, New Bedford, and surrounding areas.

Heavy rain is forecast to begin late Sunday night. Heavy rain is expected Monday until Tuesday afternoon. Rainfall levels of 1-3 inches are forecast throughout Tuesday. However, isolated bands of torrential rainfall can produce localised amounts of 4-6 inches of rain in 6 hours. It is still difficult to predict when and where these probable small areas of severe rainfall may occur. However, if they occur, they have the potential to cause flash flooding in urban and/or tiny streams.

Excessive runoff may cause flooding in rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone areas. Urban flash flooding is also possible.
