A Chicago man, who prosecutors said stole hundreds of thousands of dollars in less than a day through a heist that investigators described as ATM “jackpotting”, has been sentenced to prison.
Prison sentence
A Waukesha County judge sentenced Edison Landaeta Martinez to two and a half years in prison and five years of supervised release. According to court documents, he was convicted of stealing and interference with an automated teller machine, with a third charge dismissed as part of a plea agreement.
ATM robberies
According to investigators, Landaeta Martinez took $41,000 from Summit Credit Union in Waukesha on November 16, 2025, by ATM jackpotting. That same day, he is accused of robbing two banks, one in Wauwatosa and one in Oak Creek, using the identical approach. The thefts totalled little more than $222,000.
Landaeta Martinez arrived in Michigan about two weeks later, and investigators traced his car to two separate credit unions. The Madison Police Department eventually arrested him at the request of the Waukesha Police Department.
What is ATM jackpotting?
According to investigators, ATM jackpotting is a “cyberphysical crime” that uses technology to manipulate ATMs into delivering all of the cash they contain.
“It’s more prevalent right now,” April DeValkenaere with Fortress Forensic Investigations said in 2025, when charges were filed. “If somebody essentially interferes with the use of an ATM machine, it is a felony.”
