Farmington Hills man sentenced to prison for OWI and deadly hit-and-run on Detroit’s east side

The man accused of killing a 40-year-old Sterling Heights woman in a tragic hit-and-run while driving intoxicated in Detroit last October was sentenced to 6-15 years in prison Tuesday.

Cameron Lee Sims, 24, of Farmington Hills, was charged with five counts in connection with the Sept. 5 collision, including operating while intoxicated, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident when at fault, carrying a concealed weapon, and using a vehicle to commit a felony.

In May, he pled no contest to all five offenses and was sentenced by Judge Anne Marie McCarthy of the Third Circuit Court. He was granted a 12-day credit for time already served.

Sims crashed into Sandi Odisho’s vehicle near the intersection of Eight Mile Road and Schoenherr Street on Detroit’s east side while driving drunk and at a fast speed, according to police.

“An innocent woman died as a result of this person apparently being inebriated and failing to obey traffic laws. He then compounded that by allegedly fleeing the scene of a criminal crash in which he was at fault,” said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy following Sims’ arrest last year. “I have said this over and over again — the rules of the road are not voluntary — they are mandatory.”

A second suspect who was apparently in Sims’ vehicle was apprehended, although it is unknown whether they face any charges.
