Deadly stabbing at Busch Stadium linked to dispute between third-party contractors, police say

One man died Monday after a stabbing at Busch Stadium following what police described as a personal dispute between two third-party contractors.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department reported that officers found a 27-year-old man with a stab wound at Busch Stadium around 2:45 a.m. First Alert 4 crews at the scene said emergency vehicles were concentrated near the loading dock area.

The department stated that it detained a 65-year-old man as a person of interest.

Mitch McCoy, the department’s director of public affairs and information, said during a news conference that the dispute involved a cleaning crew and emphasized that the incident was isolated.

“I just want to reiterate that it was a dispute between two third-party contractors,” McCoy said. “These were not employees of the baseball team.”

The St. Louis Cardinals are scheduled to play the Milwaukee Brewers at the stadium on Monday at 6:45 p.m. McCoy said the incident is unrelated to the game and assured that “no one will even know this occurred” when it comes to fan safety.

“This could have happened anywhere. But what happened tonight was a dispute between two people. And you know what? At any workplace, there’s a fight or there’s some type of disagreement between employees. Rarely does that escalate into a stabbing, but it does happen. Unfortunately, it happened at a treasured St. Louis staple.”

The St. Louis Cardinals released a statement regarding the incident on Monday.

McCoy said homicide detectives are at the crime scene conducting an investigation.
