POWESHIEK COUNTY, Iowa — A 14-year-old boy from Harrisburg, Missouri, has been identified as the person killed in Tuesday’s train derailment crash in Poweshiek County, Iowa.
An Iowa State Patrol crash report identifies the victim as Robert Orton, 14, of Harrisburg, Missouri, who died at the scene when a semi truck and train collided.
Robert Orton’s father, Michael Orton, 38, of Palmyra, was airlifted from the scene to the University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.
The crash report indicates the Ortons’ semi failed to yield at the railroad crossing before being struck by a train.
The collision involved two power engines and 17 train cars. Authorities say the engines and cars derailed and the rails sustained significant damage. No hazardous materials were involved.
