LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – An injured dog discovered in an alley led investigators to uncover a suspected dogfighting operation in Louisville, according to an arrest citation.
Officials with Louisville Metro Animal Services responded Tuesday after receiving a report about a severely injured dog that had been dumped.
A witness told authorities they saw a man abandon the animal in the alley. When officers located the dog, it was covered in blood and suffering from multiple bite wounds. The pit bull mix was barely alive when rescuers arrived. Investigators also noted significant scar tissue, suggesting the dog had been involved in previous fights.
Following an investigation, officers executed two search warrants, where they found several more dogs with similar injuries.
At the locations, authorities reported discovering:
- Heavy chains attached to dogs
- Blood spatter and scratch marks on walls
- A break stick, commonly used in dogfighting
- Penicillin, believed to be used to treat injured animals
- Drugs and firearms
Police arrested Oscar Mitchell in connection with the case. He now faces multiple charges, including dog fighting, animal cruelty, and marijuana trafficking.
The investigation remains ongoing.
