According to MetroSafe, officials received a report of the shooting at 7:46 p.m. Friday.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Louisville Metro Police officers shot and killed a woman Friday who allegedly charged at them with a “large, sharp object” at an apartment complex near Jeffersontown.
Deputy Chief Emily McKinley said patrol officers responded to the 9800 block of Vieux Carre Drive at 7:45 p.m. following a report of a person “experiencing a mental health or behavioral health crisis.” The location is off Shelbyville Road and South Hurstbourne Parkway.
When officers arrived, they learned that a 28-year-old woman with self-inflicted lacerations was inside, armed with a piece of glass or another edged weapon, and locked in a bathroom, McKinley said.
The woman was “highly agitated, incoherent and making suicidal statements.” Officers at the scene “attempted to deescalate through verbal communication” and requested other responding officers to bring “less lethal tools.”
McKinley explained that because a weapon was involved and other people were present, the situation “did not meet the criteria for deflection or a mobile crisis response.”
As the woman continued making “agitated, suicidal statements” from inside the bathroom, crews from the Anchorage-Middletown Fire Department arrived and forced entry.
After the door was opened, McKinley said the woman came out and “charged at officers with a large, sharp object.” Two officers then fired their weapons, striking her. She was transported to University of Louisville Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
LMPD’s Public Integrity Unit is investigating the shooting, and the officers involved will be placed on administrative leave. In accordance with department policy, officials will release additional details and body camera footage within 10 business days.
