LOUISVILLE, Ky. — At the very end of 2025, an Indiana fisherman set a new state record.

Justin Brown of Floyd County caught a record-setting longnose gar on the Ohio River on Dec. 30 using a jigging spoon, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reported.

The fish weighed 23 pounds, 12.2 ounces, surpassing the previous 2008 record by nearly a pound and a half.

According to DNR, the shortnose gar record was set in 2025, while the spotted gar record was established in 2024.

Wildlife officials note that gar are ambush predators, lying near the water’s surface and feeding on small fish that swim past.
