Business filing scam reported by Kentucky Secretary of State

Secretary of State Michael Adams is warning Kentuckians about a business filing scam.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (KT) – Several scams are circulating across the state, and the Kentucky Secretary of State’s office says one targets required annual business filings submitted to the office.

Secretary of State Michael Adams is urging business owners to stay alert as letters reminding them to file annual reports arrive in mailboxes statewide. Businesses must file these reports between January 1 and June 30 each year, either online or by mail, for a $15 fee.

However, some unofficial entities are sending solicitation letters and charging business owners more than $160 on top of the actual $15 filing fee to submit reports on their behalf. This can be especially confusing because the total $175 charge matches what many businesses pay annually for the limited liability entity tax (LLET) with their Department of Revenue filings.

“Don’t get hustled,” Adams said. “File your annual business report directly with the Secretary of State and pay only $15.”

The Secretary of State’s office added that it is unclear whether these third parties even file the reports for the fees they collect. Business owners can check their filing status online to confirm whether their annual report has been submitted. If they paid for services they did not receive, they can dispute the charge with their bank and report the incident to local law enforcement.
