SUMMERS COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS) — Healthcare officials are alerting the public about a dangerous new opioid recently detected in Kentucky.

The substance, known as cychlorphine, is reportedly 10 times more potent than fentanyl, according to a social media post from the Summers County branch of Appalachian Regional Healthcare.

Officials say cyclorphine has already been connected to overdose deaths in neighboring states because of its extreme strength. They warn that the drug is often mixed into other illegal substances without a user’s knowledge, significantly increasing the risk of sudden and severe overdose.

Summers County ARH also noted that naloxone may only partially reverse an overdose involving cyclorphine, though administering it is still strongly encouraged to help save lives.

If a cyclorphine overdose is suspected, officials urge bystanders to call 911 immediately, administer naloxone and remain with the individual until emergency responders arrive.

“ARH encourages everyone – individuals, families and community members – to carry naloxone whenever possible,” the post concluded. “The ingredients of drugs sold illicitly are ever changing, and being prepared can save lives.”
