After nearly half a foot of rain fell within hours, parts of Kentucky are grappling with severe flooding and infrastructure damage.

The City of Jeffersonton has declared a state of emergency following Tuesday afternoon’s powerful thunderstorm, which unleashed widespread flash floods across the region.

What started as a small hole in the road quickly worsened into a major roadway collapse. Officials initially believed the damage was minor, but the situation escalated rapidly as rainfall intensified.

City crews have been working around the clock to stabilize the area and prevent additional destruction.

Jimmy Franconica, Director of Public Works, said the city acted swiftly to initiate repairs.

“This morning at 8:00, we met with about six to eight contractors on site. We explained that we’ve declared an emergency and gave them the green light to move forward,” Franconica said. “We’ve asked them to design and build a 100% complete, permanent fix — and to do so in a timely manner.”

Despite the major washout, officials confirmed that no injuries or accidents have been reported.
