A United Airlines flight from Indianapolis to Houston didn’t get far Wednesday when an onboard disturbance forced it back to the gate, where police waited. Authorities said 32-year-old Jacob Cook of Fortville was apprehended at Indianapolis International Airport after the plane returned. He was then brought into Marion County Adult Detention Center on preliminary allegations of interrupting aircraft operations, disorderly behavior at an airport, and resisting law officers.
Flight monitoring data show that United 3989 departed Indianapolis before reversing course and returning to the airport shortly after takeoff. According to FlightStats, UA3989 generally travels between Indianapolis and Houston on Mesa-operated regional aircraft.
According to Fox59, footage from a Facebook livestream seen by reporters shows a guy standing in the aisle shouting at passengers and personnel, at one point requesting that the plane land so he could get off. When the jet returned to the gate, police apprehended the passenger, and preliminary charges were filed in connection with the event.
The Indianapolis Airport Authority told reporters that the disruption was limited to a single flight and did not impair overall airport operations, thus the drama remained inside the cabin rather than spilling out into the rest of IND.
Federal law also prohibits meddling with flight crews. According to Cornell Law School, fines and up to 20 years in jail can result from attacking or threatening a flight crew member or attendant under 49 U.S.C. section 46504, which makes such behavior illegal.
According to Justia, Indiana sentencing guidelines state that a Level 4 felony has a normal range of two to twelve years, with an advisory sentence of six years. Any real punishment would be determined by the formal charges filed by prosecutors and the outcome of the case, which might include a plea agreement.
Marion County court records will reveal whether prosecutors proceed with formal charges and when Cook is set to appear in court. For the time being, officials say the investigation is ongoing and that few details beyond the initial report will be released.
