A list of deadly earthquakes in the Philippines

The Philippines sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” making it one of the most earthquake-prone nations on Earth. Below is a look at some of the most significant recent earthquakes to strike the country:

June 8, 2026: A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck offshore of Mindanao in the southern Philippines, killing at least 32 people. Tsunami waves reached several coastal areas.

Oct. 10, 2025: Two powerful offshore earthquakes hit the same region in the southern Philippines within hours of each other. The first, a magnitude 7.4 tremor, killed at least seven people. The second measured 6.8 in magnitude and prompted local authorities to issue a tsunami warning.

Sept. 30, 2025: A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck Bogo City in Cebu province, catching the region completely off guard. The local Bogo Bay fault line had been dormant for more than 400 years, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. The shallow quake hit while residents were asleep, killing at least 72 people, injuring hundreds more, and causing widespread damage — making it one of the most devastating earthquakes to strike the central region in over a decade.

Dec. 2, 2023: A magnitude 7.6 earthquake hit off the coast of Mindanao in the southern Philippines around midnight, sending panicked villagers fleeing their homes. At least three people lost their lives.

Nov. 17, 2023: A magnitude 6.7 earthquake off the coast of Mindanao killed nine people, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. Ceilings collapsed in shopping malls, and landslides and structural damage were reported across affected areas.

July 27, 2022: A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Luzon island in the northern Philippines, killing 11 people.

Dec. 15, 2019: A magnitude 6.8 earthquake in Davao del Sur in Mindanao killed 13 people. It was the fourth quake above magnitude 6 to hit Mindanao since October of that year.
