A mother faces charges after police discovered her 6-year-old kid strolling alone in a Sunny Isles Beach park over the weekend.
Elena Sexton, 41, of Texas, was detained Saturday on charges of child neglect with no substantial bodily harm, according to Miami-Dade jail records.
According to the arrest record, a witness called police around 8:50 p.m. Saturday regarding a boy who was discovered alone at Town Center Park on Collins Avenue.
According to the report, the boy approached him and explained that he was alone because his mother had abandoned him, that he was terrified, and that he hadn’t eaten since breakfast.
According to the report, the witness claimed to have seen the youngster alone for about an hour. Officers contacted the youngster, who indicated that his mother had left him to go buy food with a friend, according to the report. “In addition, he was scared and did not want to leave with a stranger.”
Officers searched the park but did not find the mother or a caretaker, but they did catch Sexton walking back and took her into custody before arresting and booking her into jail, according to the report.
On Monday, Sexton appeared before a judge, who set her bond at $2,500.
