First Pacific Tropical Storm of the Season: Meteorologists Confirm Amanda’s Arrival

Tropical Storm Amanda formed Wednesday in the Pacific Ocean, becoming the first tropical cyclone of the season, the National Hurricane Center announced.

The Miami-based weather center placed Amanda approximately 1,475 miles (2,375 kilometers) west-southwest of the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula. With the storm’s center remaining at sea, the cyclone posed no immediate threat to land.

Meteorologists recorded maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (65 kph). Forecasters expect the storm to gain strength over the next couple of days before weakening heading into the weekend.

The Pacific hurricane season started May 15. The Atlantic hurricane season began Monday, and no cyclones have formed in that basin yet this year.
