Northern Kentucky police unveil app to improve communication with public

The Southgate Police Department is staying connected to the community through a few clicks on a new mobile app.

The app, introduced earlier this year, operates through Kentucky Police Connect.

The statewide platform serves police and sheriff’s departments across the Bluegrass State. So far, three departments have adopted it, including the Southgate Police Department.

It’s free for download in Apple and Android app stores.

Chief John Christmann said his department updates the app daily, including adding officer headshots and bios so community members can recognize those who serve the area.

The app lets users submit nonurgent tips, such as reporting issues affecting their neighborhood or flagging new scams.

It also provides resources, including information on local scams, opioid abuse, Marsy’s Law protections for crime victims, and more.

Police can share important updates through push alerts as well.

The most recent alert was issued after a tanker truck exploded on I-471 last month, sparking a massive fire on the interstate.

“When that happened, we were able to put out a push notification saying, ‘hey, 471 is closed.’ and the detour route. And then when the route was open, we were able to push that back out,” Christmann explained.

If you’re out of town, you can also request that a Southgate officer check on your home.

The statewide app is designed for police and sheriff’s departments throughout the Bluegrass State.

The app is not just for residents. Christmann encourages people who work in the city, frequently drive through or have family in the area to download it too.
