Suspected shoplifter on electric cart taken into custody after unwelcome return to Walmart

A Leesburg woman was taken into custody for trespassing at Walmart and stealing $12 in drinks and bug killer.

An officer responded to Walmart, located at 2501 Citrus Blvd., when asset protection detained 48-year-old Faith Yolanda Barnes in their office at 3:50 p.m. on Wednesday, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department. When a staff member recognized her as someone who had previously been trespassing, he explained that she was in an electric cart.

The employee observed Barnes placing products in her cart’s basket and heading to the self-checkout, as captured on surveillance camera footage. She did not scan everything, so another employee approached her to assist with the missing items. Barnes proceeded with the transaction after the register was unlocked, according to the investigation, without scanning anything she had previously overlooked.

She paid for some of the stuff before trying to exit the business. She was then stopped and led to the loss prevention office with one 12-pack of Gatorades and one Raid bug killer, totaling $12.26, according to the report.

A review of her criminal history revealed that she had been convicted of theft in July 2024 and January 2021. She was also trespassing in the store in May 2024, according to the report.

Barnes was arrested on counts of retail theft (two or more prior incidents) and trespassing. She was booked into the Lake County Jail without bond.
