LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Southbound lanes of Interstate 65 will close overnight this week as crews continue work on the Kennedy Bridge connecting southern Indiana and Louisville.
The closures are part of the second and final phase of a project to replace expansion joints on the bridge.
I-65 South over the bridge will shut down starting at Exit 1 to U.S. 31 South/Stansifer Avenue/10th Street in Jeffersonville, Indiana from 10 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, through 4 a.m. Wednesday.
Another closure is scheduled from 8 p.m. Friday, April 10, until 8 a.m. Saturday, April 11.
During these times, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet advises drivers to take a detour via Interstate 265 West to Interstate 64 East to reconnect with I-65 South.
The closures will allow crews to continue working on the left three lanes of the bridge. Work on the right three lanes was completed earlier this year.
The expansion joint replacement project began in February and is expected to finish this fall as part of a broader $6.9 million effort scheduled for completion by April 2026. Drivers should expect intermittent lane closures throughout construction.
According to KYTC, expansion joints are components of the bridge deck that allow for movement caused by temperature changes, helping prevent cracks and maintain structural integrity.
