A Kentucky man is accused of fatally shooting his wife after she asked him to clean the house before they left for a trip, according to police.
Patrick Brents, 57, faces a charge of first-degree assault related to domestic violence, according to jail records. He was booked into custody on March 14.
Police said the incident happened at the couple’s home in the 600 block of Southwestern Parkway in Louisville. Brents’ wife, identified as Carolyn Ross-Brents, was also at the home.
According to the Louisville Metro Police Department, the couple began arguing after Ross-Brents asked her husband to clean before their trip so they could return to a tidy home.
The argument escalated, with the couple also reportedly clashing over family matters, according to WDRB.
Investigators said Brents went to a bedroom, retrieved a gun from a drawer, and returned to where his wife was. A witness told police that Ross-Brents pleaded with him not to shoot her, and he responded, “What are you going to do about it?”
Authorities said the gun then discharged, striking Ross-Brents in the abdomen.
According to reports, the couple’s son was present during the incident. When he asked Brents why he shot his mother, Brents allegedly replied, “she’s shot.”
The son ran outside and told another family member to call 911.
Officers responded to the home around 4 p.m. and found Brents still at the scene. Ross-Brents was transported to a hospital, where she later died.
Brents told investigators he had grabbed the gun because he intended to leave the house, but claimed it discharged unintentionally.
He is being held on a $250,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
