Leaders at the Bullitt County Detention Center said they mistakenly released an inmate who should have remained behind bars.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Officials said an inmate mistakenly released last week from the Bullitt County Detention Center is now back in custody.
Mike Goldsmith, chief deputy at the detention center, said law enforcement had been searching for Dustin Harris.
Goldsmith said a sergeant released Harris on Tuesday after district court ordered his release. Because Harris had similar charges in both district and circuit court, the sergeant did not realize he was still supposed to remain in custody on the circuit court charges.
Goldsmith said officials discovered the mistake Friday morning.
Harris faces charges of terroristic threatening, harassing communications and menacing. His bond was set at $10,000 cash. According to court records, the alleged victim told police Harris called her throughout the night and threatened to kill her. She also said he placed his hand on a knife and told her it was meant for her, leaving her in fear for her life.
Goldsmith said the jail has been transparent about the situation and notified both the victim and the county attorney about the mistaken release.
Just after 4 p.m. Monday, Bullitt County Jailer Brian Whittaker confirmed Harris had been taken back into custody.
Goldsmith said authorities located Harris at his home in Brandenburg, where jailers took him into custody without incident.
