A 16-year-old girl has died after being struck by two vehicles while trying to cross Cane Run Road Tuesday morning.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – A 16-year-old girl was killed after two vehicles hit her while she attempted to cross Cane Run Road on Tuesday morning.

Louisville Metro Police responded to reports of a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian on Cane Run Road at Teakwood Circle. When officers arrived, they found 16-year-old Janiah Brown, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

LMPD’s preliminary investigation found that Brown was not using a crosswalk when she tried to cross Cane Run Road and was struck by two southbound vehicles. However, there are no clearly marked crosswalks in the area, which sits in front of a TARC and JCPS bus stop.

Neighbors said they often see children walking to the bus stop in the dark and raised concerns about the lack of lighting.

“It’s just really heart wrenching because some parents lost their 16-year-old today and there is nothing you can say to make that right,” said Ellasha Ferriell, a neighbor. “But there is something we can say to not have this happen again. It’s really dark. I see the kids every day when I leave for work. It would help if we had some type of lighting.”

Several schools are located nearby, including Western High School, Farnsley Middle School and Wellington Elementary School. Metro Councilwoman Tammy Hawkins, who said she knows Brown and her family, confirmed the teen was a student at Central High School.

All drivers involved stayed at the scene. LMPD’s Traffic Unit is continuing to investigate the crash.
