Western Kentucky is preparing for a prolonged winter storm that could bring up to 13 inches of snow, along with periods of sleet and freezing rain, through Sunday night.
The National Weather Service in Paducah has issued a Winter Storm Warning for all of western Kentucky, effective from 1 a.m. Friday through 7 p.m. Sunday. The warning includes communities such as Paducah, Murray, Hopkinsville, and Owensboro.
Forecasters expect heavy snow bands to develop early Saturday, while areas south of the Ohio River may see a mix of sleet and freezing rain. Road conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly Saturday morning, particularly along I-24, U.S. 60, and I-69.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is warning travelers to prepare for reduced visibility and ice accumulation, especially in southern counties including Graves, Christian, and Trigg.
While sleet could limit snowfall totals in some far western areas, icing may pose a greater threat by weighing down power lines and trees. Residents are encouraged to prepare for potential extended power outages and to avoid non-essential travel during the storm.
Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing throughout the weekend. The Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. Sunday, and additional alerts may be issued as conditions evolve.
