LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Old Man Winter is set to show some strength this week, likely marking the start of a harsh winter pattern for the region. Two main systems are expected in the coming days.
The week begins on a calmer note, with some sunshine across the area. Frigid morning temperatures will rebound into the 40s for much of the state.
As noted, two key systems will shape the week ahead. To keep things clear, here’s a breakdown of each one.
SYSTEM #1
The main impact from this system is expected Wednesday and Thursday.
This is the weaker of the two systems.
An upper-level disturbance will move in from the northwest.
A band of rain is expected early Wednesday along and ahead of the system, before changing to light snow later in the day as colder air moves in behind it.
This system should move through fairly quickly due to strong energy following behind it.
Frigid north-northwest winds will move across the warmer-than-normal waters of the Great Lakes, picking up moisture. That flow will bring lake-effect snow showers and flurries into the region Wednesday night and Thursday.
Light snow accumulations are likely, especially across central and eastern Kentucky.
Arctic air will arrive Wednesday night and Thursday. High temperatures on Thursday are expected to remain in the low to mid-20s, with wind chills dropping into the single digits and low teens.

SYSTEM #2
The impact window for this system stretches from late Friday through roughly Monday.
This will involve a series of systems dropping in from the northwest during that period.
A deep dip in the jet stream is expected to settle over the region, with multiple pieces of energy rotating through like spokes on a bicycle wheel.
Each of these waves of energy could produce snow or light snow.
More significant accumulations are possible, especially if one of these systems strengthens more than expected.
With very cold air in place, snowfall is expected to be light and fluffy.
Looking at the cold, single-digit low temperatures are possible by Sunday and Monday.
Wind chills could fall below zero during this time.
