LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 11, 2026) — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is urging motorists to use caution as Central Kentucky continues to experience low temperatures and the potential for light snow accumulations. Wet and cold roadways can create hazardous driving conditions, and KYTC crews have already been deployed in specific counties to treat major routes.
Winter driving safety tips:
-
Avoid unnecessary travel if conditions worsen.
-
Check the forecast and plan ahead before beginning your trip.
-
Winterize your vehicle: Check the battery, antifreeze, heater, defroster, wipers, and washer fluid.
-
Dress warmly in layers and be prepared for unexpected delays.
-
Keep your gas tank at least two‑thirds full to help prevent fuel line freezing and possible long delays.
-
Tell someone your route before you leave.
-
Carry a cell phone for emergencies.
-
Equip an emergency kit with items like jumper cables, flares or reflectors, additional washer fluid, an ice scraper, blankets, nonperishable food, a first aid kit, and traction material.
-
Drive carefully: Allow extra time to reach your destination and avoid using cruise control on slippery roads.
-
Give snow‑removal equipment plenty of space.
-
Watch for icy spots on bridges and ramps, which can freeze before other road surfaces.
-
Increase following distance: Snow and ice greatly increase stopping distances — up to four times more than on dry pavement.
-
Use low‑beam headlights on dull, cloudy days to improve visibility.
-
If your vehicle begins to skid, stay calm, ease off the gas, and steer gently in the direction you want to go.
Motorists are encouraged to stay informed and exercise caution as temperatures remain low and light snow may affect travel across Central Kentucky.
