Two tornadoes confirmed in Kentucky after severe storms

The National Weather Service has confirmed that two tornadoes touched down in Kentucky during a recent overnight severe weather outbreak.

Damage surveys identified tornado impacts in Hart and Ohio counties, while Green County experienced straight-line wind damage reaching up to 80 mph.

In Hart County, surveyors found evidence of an EF-0 tornado with peak winds near 80 mph that touched down east of Millerstown.

In Ohio County, an EF-1 tornado with maximum winds around 100 mph was confirmed northeast of Hartford.

The National Weather Service said damage assessments are still ongoing in Adair, Grayson, Oldham, and Taylor counties.

Power outages across the state

Multiple rounds of severe weather from Monday, April 27 into Tuesday, April 28 left thousands without power statewide. Outages initially exceeded 20,000 but had dropped to 8,262 by 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to poweroutage.us.

More than 2,000 outages were reported in Jefferson County. In Fayette County, LG&E & KU’s outage map showed 875 customers without power, mainly in the Zandale neighborhood between Nicholasville Road and Tates Creek Road in Lexington.

Restoration in that area, originally expected around 1:30 p.m., has been delayed until approximately 4:30 p.m., according to the latest update. The outage affected Glendover Elementary School, but Fayette County Public Schools spokesperson Miranda Scully said the school continued operating on a normal schedule using a generator.

Tornado warnings issued

The storms prompted tornado warnings across numerous counties, including Adair, Bath, Bracken, Daviess, Grayson, Green, Hardin, Hart, Henderson, Henry, Hopkins, Larue, Mason, McLean, Ohio, Oldham, Pendleton, Robertson, Rowan, Shelby, Taylor, and Webster counties, according to the Iowa Environmental Mesonet.

Fayette County was also placed under a severe thunderstorm warning from 2:04 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. Wind gusts of at least 40 mph were recorded around 1:50 a.m., according to the Kentucky Mesonet.
