Dozens of workers are set to lose their jobs after UPS announced plans to shut down a facility in Louisville.
The company confirmed it will close the Bluegrass UPS Facility on Bluegrass Parkway on June 2. A WARN notice stated that 65 positions will be affected. UPS added that it will try to place impacted employees in other roles where possible.
In a written statement Monday, a UPS spokesperson said the company is undergoing the largest “network reconfiguration” in its history as it works to build a “nimbler, more efficient” operation.
“Some positions will be affected, though most changes are expected to occur through attrition,” spokesperson Karen Tomaszewski Hill said. “We’re committed to supporting our people throughout this process. While our building footprint is changing, our record of reliable pickup and delivery is not. We remain committed to providing industry-leading service to customers in more than 200 countries and territories around the world.”
The move comes as part of a broader initiative to consolidate older facilities and redirect packages to larger, highly automated hubs.
Officials with Teamsters Local 89, the union representing workers at the UPS Bluegrass facility, said they expect to receive more details Tuesday about the closure and who will be impacted.
