LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A large part of south central Indiana and central, north-central, and south-central Kentucky will experience dangerously cold conditions early Sunday, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Louisville warns. A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect, with wind chills in some areas falling as low as 10 below zero.
For the primary advisory area—including Louisville, Lexington, Elizabethtown, Frankfort, Bowling Green, Corydon, Jasper, Scottsburg, Paoli, Madison, Campbellsville, Bardstown, and Danville—wind chills are expected to reach -10 between 1 a.m. and 1 p.m. EST. Officials warn these conditions could lead to frostbite or hypothermia if proper precautions are not taken.
A separate advisory covers portions of south-central Kentucky, including the Barren River region and communities such as Glasgow, Columbia, Scottsville, Tompkinsville, and Albany. Wind chills in these areas may drop to around zero during the same overnight period.
The coldest conditions are expected just before sunrise, when temperatures settle in the teens and winds remain strong behind a persistent Arctic air mass. Residents are urged to dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors. Portable heaters should be used cautiously, and generators or grills should never be operated indoors due to carbon monoxide risks.
Officials also encourage checking on older neighbors, relatives, and those with limited heating resources as the dangerous chill moves through the region.
