‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ continues through New Year’s Day

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Law enforcement agencies across Kentucky are gearing up for the nationwide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, which runs from Dec. 10 through Jan. 1.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that December drunk-driving deaths are now at a 15-year high nationwide. The agency notes that even one drink can affect driving at a blood alcohol concentration of .02, when visual and multitasking abilities start to decline.

“As we get ready to celebrate Christmas with family and friends, let’s do everything we can to keep our neighbors safe,” Gov. Andy Beshear said. “Make the choice to drive sober or plan ahead to protect both yourself and our neighbors.”

“Every year, lives are regrettably lost for something that was 100% preventable because someone chose to get behind the wheel impaired,” Transportation Cabinet Secretary Jim Gray said. “There’s no shortage of options to stay safe, like designating a sober driver, calling a rideshare, or finding another safe ride. Protect yourself, your passengers, and everyone sharing the road this holiday season.”

Over the past five years, Kentucky has recorded 448 impaired driving-related crashes during the Christmas and New Year holidays, causing 192 injuries and 13 deaths.

To help prevent impaired driving tragedies this holiday season, KYTC recommends:

  • Plan a safe ride home before festivities begin.

  • If you’re impaired, use a ride-booking service or taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or take public transportation.

  • If you spot an impaired driver, pull over safely and call law enforcement. You can dial the KSP toll-free line at 800-222-5555 or call 911.

  • If you know someone about to drive while impaired, take their keys and help them find another way to reach their destination.

  • Always wear a seat belt. It’s the law and your best protection against an impaired driver. Buckling up helps prevent serious injury or death in a crash.

The “Drive Sober” campaign is funded by NHTSA and distributed to law enforcement agencies through each state’s highway safety office.
