LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — Health officials are warning that this year’s flu season could be severe as a new strain begins to spread.

A new flu variant, known as Subclade K, now makes up most H3N2 cases nationwide.

“This is a new twist. It has four different changes, meaning our immune system may not be as prepared for it,” said FOX 56 News Chief Medical Contributor Dr. Ryan Stanton.

The CDC reports that states like Kentucky are still seeing low flu activity overall, but infections are steadily rising.

Stanton stressed that vaccination remains the best protection.

“Wash your hands often, wear a mask if you’re sick, stay home from work when you’re not feeling well, and reduce the risk of spreading it to people who are at higher risk,” he said.

Subclade K is not included in this year’s flu vaccine, which could contribute to more infections. Still, Stanton urged everyone — especially vulnerable groups — to get vaccinated.

“We’re likely heading into a pretty rough flu season. From now through the end of March, I expect high numbers of flu and other viruses,” he said. “For those at higher risk, getting the flu shot is strongly recommended. Our hospitals, ERs, and ICUs will be busy. Flu remains one of the leading viral causes of death in the U.S. every year.”
