A man in Kentucky is in custody after allegedly injuring a child during a diaper change.
Jorge Jesus Perez-Ramirez, 29, was arrested Wednesday in connection with the incident. Jail records show he is charged with first-degree assault and first-degree criminal abuse of a child age 12 or younger.
According to reports, Perez-Ramirez had unlawfully taken custody of his girlfriend’s child, local NBC affiliate WAVE said.
The alleged abuse happened on Oct. 14, WAVE reported. The child was taken to an urgent care center with severe injuries, prompting staff to call 911. The child was then rushed to a children’s hospital, where medical staff reportedly concluded that the injuries were caused by abusive head trauma.
WAVE reported that the child was in critical condition.
Authorities have released few details. Louisville CBS affiliate WLKY reported that court documents say Perez-Ramirez “manifested extreme indifference to the value of human life by wantonly manipulating the victim in such a harsh way to create an injury indicative of pediatric abusive head trauma while changing a diaper.”
Jail records show Perez-Ramirez has pleaded not guilty. He remains in custody at the Louisville Metro Detention Center under an immigration detainer. Court records list a preliminary hearing scheduled for Dec. 8.
Under Kentucky law, the child abuse charge carries a possible sentence of 10 to 20 years in prison.
