CHICAGO, IL — Northern Illinois woke up to its first measurable snowfall of the season Sunday morning, with some areas reporting up to 2 inches of accumulation.

According to CoCoRaHS observation network data, light snow fell overnight across Cook, Lake, Boone, McHenry, and Winnebago counties, as well as parts of southern Wisconsin.

The highest totals were recorded in Capron (1.9 inches) and Rockford (1.8 inches). Other communities, including Buffalo Grove, Belvidere, and Harvard, saw between 1.4 and 1.6 inches, while areas farther south, such as Naperville (0.5 inches) and Oak Park (0.4 inches), received lighter amounts.

This year’s snowfall arrived about nine days later than average, as the first flakes typically fall around October 31 at both O’Hare and Midway airports.

Forecasters said a lake-effect snow setup could bring more flurries and minor accumulation later Sunday night into Monday, especially in snowbelt areas near Lake Michigan.

Drivers are urged to use caution, as temperatures dipping into the 20s could lead to slick bridges and untreated roads overnight.
