MIDDLETOWN, Ky. (WDRB) — Two Middletown police officers came to the rescue early one morning after a horse fell through a backyard pool cover during an unexpected late-night adventure.
The incident happened just before 3 a.m. in late October, when two horses wandered away from a nearby farm and into a neighborhood off Old Henry Road. One horse ended up stuck in a backyard swimming pool after falling through the cover.
Homeowner Brenda Morris said she and her husband were awakened when their dog started barking.
“Our dog, Penny, started barking about 2:30 in the morning,” Morris said. “I looked at my Ring camera and noticed there were two horses walking on our driveway.”
Moments later, she heard splashing sounds and saw that one of the horses had fallen into the pool.
“All four legs were stuck, and the horse couldn’t get out,” Morris said.
Morris immediately called police. Officers Trey McKnight and Sgt. Ricky Guffey arrived within minutes to find the horse struggling to keep its head above water.
“I didn’t know how long the horse could hold his head above water,” McKnight said.
Body camera footage showed the officers using a garden hose as a makeshift lasso to pull the horse toward the pool steps.
“Me and my sergeant pulled him over to the stairs, and he walked right out,” McKnight recalled.
After several tense moments, the horse climbed safely out of the pool with only minor scrapes.
The officers laughed later about their unconventional rescue.
“I did tell my sergeant that they could take my gun and issue me a lasso,” McKnight joked.
“When I got home that morning, I told my wife, and she laughed,” Sgt. Guffey added.
For Morris and her neighbors, it’s a story they’ll never forget.
“I think my husband told everyone the next day,” Morris said. “You won’t believe this — and I’ve shared it with a few people too.”
Other than a few scrapes, the horse is expected to make a full recovery and has since returned to its nearby farm.
