LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A crash involving a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle in a construction zone between eastbound I-264 and northbound I-71 caused heavy traffic delays on both highways, according to a MetroSafe supervisor.
The crash was reported around 2:13 p.m., and a tow truck was dispatched to clear the vehicles. It’s unclear when traffic at the interchange will return to normal.
The construction zone is part of an ongoing project to widen I-264 and rebuild its interchange with I-71. Because eastbound I-264 connects directly to southbound I-71, drivers are experiencing significant backups for several miles beyond the interchange.
TRIMARC traffic cameras showed congestion on I-71 stretching as far south as the Zorn Avenue interchange.
The construction project at this busy northeast Louisville interchange coincides with the development of the new 972,000-square-foot Department of Veterans Affairs medical center on Brownsboro Road, which is expected to open by early 2026.
