BARREN COUNTY, Ky. — Kentucky residents who rely on SNAP benefits will continue receiving assistance, even as the federal government shutdown persists.

According to the nonprofit Bridge Kentucky, a federal judge ordered the continuation of food assistance after the state filed a lawsuit against the federal government. The ruling ensures that November SNAP benefits will still be distributed — though at 50% of the normal amount.

State officials said some payments could appear as early as Wednesday, while others may take a few additional days to process.

“It doesn’t matter what side of the fence they are on politically. It’s just a real tough time for a lot of people,” said Wade Copas with Bridge Kentucky. “And when you’re food insecure and hungry, that makes everything more difficult, especially with kids.”

Team Kentucky, which led the lawsuit, stated that the ruling requires federal agencies to provide reduced payments this month. The federal government had previously opted to cut November SNAP benefits in half due to the shutdown.
