CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Construction is set to begin Monday night on the Eugene A. Carter Memorial Bridge, the most heavily traveled bridge in the state.
The bridge, which carries I-64 traffic over the Kanawha River, will see lane closures throughout October as Triton Construction works to repair concrete, install a water-resistant membrane, and add a two-inch asphalt layer. The work follows the appearance of several potholes this spring and summer, which led the West Virginia Division of Highways (DOH) to conduct emergency repairs causing traffic delays.
DOH spokesperson Brent Walker said the new membrane and asphalt layer are expected to extend the life of the bridge deck before a full redecking project, potentially scheduled for 2028, becomes necessary.
Lane closures are planned as follows:
-
Monday through Friday: 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
-
Saturday and Sunday: all day
-
Monday: left two eastbound lanes closed
-
Tuesday through Sunday: left two lanes in both directions closed
-
Weekends: left lane in both directions closed from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Walker noted that on- and off-ramp closures may also be required, and updates will be shared as milestones are reached.
He urged motorists to exercise caution, saying, “Heads up, phone down, slow down, pay attention, get through it and get on about your day.”
The project is expected to be completed by the end of November.
