A gay couple walking in Mattapan was reportedly targeted with homophobic slurs earlier this month, and one of the men was struck in the back of the head with a baseball bat during a confrontation, police said.
One of the men told police that he and his partner were walking toward a convenience and liquor store on River Street just before 8 p.m. on Sept. 13 when a group of men allegedly “began making anti-homosexual remarks towards them,” according to a police report obtained by Boston.com.
The man said he approached the group, leading to a verbal dispute, the report added, which eventually escalated into a fight that spilled onto the street.
Two men in the group who allegedly used homophobic slurs “were seen swinging unidentifiable objects at the victims,” the police report said. The group reportedly split up to attack both members of the couple.
When officers arrived, they found one man of the couple lying in a River Street parking lot, bleeding from the back of his head, according to the report. The couple claims he was struck with a baseball bat.
The report highlighted that the incident is considered a suspected hate crime, and the police department’s Civil Rights Unit has been notified.
The men involved were not identified in the report.
First responders treated the injured man at the scene before transporting him to a Boston hospital for further evaluation, the report said.
A Boston police spokesperson stated that the investigation is ongoing.
