A 26-year-old Illinois man faces felony charges after allegedly stabbing another man in the back in East Chicago.
St. Catherine Hospital opened in 1928 and was acquired by Powers Health in 2001, according to the Powers Health.
According to the same newspaper source, the 26-year-old male faces felony charges.
According to Justia Law, battery with a deadly weapon that causes significant bodily injury is a Level 5 felony under Indiana Code. A conviction on that charge carries a statutory prison penalty of one to six years, with a three-year recommended sentence, according to the Gibson Law Office.
Separate cross-state pursuit. The stabbing is one of several recent cases in which Northwest Indiana officials have had to deal with Illinois-based suspects or defendants. In a separate incident, an East Chicago violent crime suspect pursued police on a high-speed chase that crossed the state line into Chicago before colliding, according to CBS News. That case is different from the stabbing, but it demonstrates how rapidly suspects in the region can cross the border.
East Chicago has already faced violent, weapon-related disputes with out-of-state residents. According to the Northwest Indiana Times, in November 2024, an Evanston, Illinois man locked himself inside the East Chicago Police Department and stabbed an officer with a Taser prong. Lake County prosecutors also filed charges in a different knife-related fight in September 2026, following an argument involving an Illinois resident that resulted in a stabbing and an injured police officer.
The suspect’s relationship with the victim, as well as the motive for the attack, has not been revealed. It is also unclear whether extradition processes will be necessary if the suspect, who is thought to be in Illinois, is apprehended and detained.
