A former Indianapolis teacher will serve two years in prison for recording a fight involving students with disabilities.
Julious Johnican was sentenced Thursday to 730 days in the Indiana Department of Correction. He pled guilty in August to felony neglect of a dependent.
The case dates back to 2023, when Johnican worked at the George Washington Carver Montessori IPS School.
“Schools are supposed to be safe spaces where children can learn, grow, and feel protected,” said Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears. “The defendant abused the trust placed in him as an educator and subjected vulnerable children to the unthinkable.”
The family of a special needs student accused Johnican of filming another student assaulting their child. According to the allegations, his voice can be heard encouraging the beating on the video.
The family eventually filed a civil case.
