A Hancock County Sheriff’s deputy was taken into custody Thursday morning, following a months-long investigation into charges of misconduct and intimidation.
Indiana State Police arrested James Heneghan, 33, on counts of intimidation, official misconduct, and fraud. The inquiry began in April 2026, when the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office received a report of intimidation. The sheriff referred the case to the McCordsville Police Department, which subsequently reported it to state police.
When the charges originally surfaced, Heneghan was placed on administrative leave from the sheriff’s office.
Detectives with the Indiana State Police discovered that the claims began with Heneghan sending threatening text messages to another person. Investigators eventually discovered evidence that Heneghan had inappropriately employed automatic license plate readers. An audit indicated that Heneghan conducted unlawful searches of the camera database for people he knew.
