2 gas station employees arrested after stealing more than 300 lottery tickets in South Carolina

Two former Chesterfield County gas station employees have been charged after officials said they stole and attempted to redeem hundreds of South Carolina Education Lottery scratch-off tickets.

According to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), Darlene F. Helms, 67, and Yoisha Renee Merell Chambers, 47, worked at the In & Out Mini Mart on West McGregor Street in Pageland.

Investigators claimed security footage captured the women taking and attempting to cash in about 369 scratch-off lottery tickets between March 11 and March 18. Authorities put the tickets’ value at $11,478.

Helms and Chambers were charged on May 14 with intent to defraud and counterfeiting game tickets.

SLED stated that the probe was requested by the South Carolina Education Lottery.

Both women were booked at the Chesterfield County Detention Center. The 4th Circuit Solicitor’s Office will take care of the case.
