The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office has sentenced a Wicker Park man to four and a half years in prison for torturing and killing at least four kittens three years ago.
Thomas Martel pleaded guilty to both animal torture and aggravated cruelty. His sentencing was revealed on Monday.
According to prosecutors and Chicago police, Martel drowned and strangled two cats. A third cat in his care died of mutilation.
Officers also discovered a kitten in a plastic bag at Martel’s apartment on the 1500 block of North Wicker Park Avenue. The woman who submitted the complaint informed investigators that the cat had been microwaved.
According to the police report, Martel had “serious mental problems” and was on prescription medicine at the time of the acts.
Authorities have not said how Martel and the lady who submitted the allegation knew each other.
