Speeding BMW driver apprehended as cops investigate drive-by shooting

A Summerfield man in a BMW was arrested for driving with a suspended license during an investigation into a drive-by shooting.

At 11 p.m. Tuesday, a deputy responded to a probable drive-by gunshot near Southeast 103rd Avenue and Southeast 167th Place Road in Sumerfield, according to a Marion County Sheriff’s Office arrest report. The anonymous complainant reported that 42-year-old Steven Wayne West was driving a white BMW SUV around the neighborhood while shooting what sounded like bullets.

Upon arrival, the deputy noticed the BMW on the eastbound side of the intersection of South U.S. Highway 441 and Southeast Highway 42. He then stopped the vehicle on the 9900 block of Southeast Highway. 42. According to the complaint, West reversed the BMW after coming to a halt and nearly collided with the patrol vehicle.

A felony takedown was then carried out, and West was detained after exiting the vehicle. During the investigation, the deputy discovered West did not have a valid license. He stated that he was driving around the neighborhood with a friend and claimed it was only a short drive on Southeast Hwy. 42, according to the report.

A later check of his driving history revealed that he had an active suspension from Henry County, Virginia, for DUI and driving with a suspended license. The suspension and guilty conviction were implemented on July 3, 2008. He was also found guilty of driving with a suspended license in the same county on July 7, 2010, according to the report.

Additionally, West was convicted guilty of battery on a law enforcement officer in Henry County on March 25, 2009, according to the report.

The inquiry concluded that the purported drive-by gunshot was unsubstantiated. According to the investigation, West did not have a firearm in his possession or car.

West was still arrested on the accusation of driving with a suspended or revoked license for DUI (third or subsequent infraction). The Virginia native was booked into Marion County Jail and released after posting a $10,000 bond.
