Hit-and-run in Clarksville leads to major drug bust arrest

CLARKSVILLE, Ind. (WAVE) – Police said a man is in custody after a hit-and-run in Clarksville led to a major drug bust.

Officers responded shortly after midnight on Wednesday, April 22, to a report of a single-vehicle crash near US Route 31 and Stansifer Avenue.

The first officer at the scene learned that the driver had fled on foot after the crash. When checking the vehicle, the officer reportedly found loose methamphetamine on the front seats.

Police later located the driver, identified as Donovan Smith of Elizabethtown, near the Radisson Hotel.

Authorities said Smith discarded bags containing guns and drugs along the roadside while running from the scene. He also told officers he had fallen asleep while driving, likely due to drug use.

Officers recovered the following items:

3 pounds of methamphetamine
112 grams of cocaine
51 grams of crack cocaine
94 grams of marijuana
Two 9mm handguns with a total of 73 rounds of ammunition

Smith is being held at the Clark County Jail and faces charges including:

Dealing in methamphetamine
Dealing in cocaine
Unlawful carry of a handgun
Possession of a legend drug
Possession of marijuana
Possession of paraphernalia
Leaving the scene of an accident
