LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville is working to re-establish ties with former Papa John’s CEO John Schnatter.
UofL President Gerry Bradley, who has embraced the theme “Forward Together,” announced efforts to reconcile with Schnatter as part of that vision.
“I want to thank Chairman Benz, President Bradley, and the University of Louisville Board of Trustees for the thoughtful way in which they reconciled with me today by reassessing the University’s decision to sever ties with me in 2018. The example they are setting today through their servant leadership is greatly appreciated and a positive sign for the future of UofL. I’m encouraged by the spirit of their emphasis on ‘Forward Together’ and I share that vision,” Schnatter said in a news release.
Schnatter, the founder of Papa John’s and a former member of the university’s Board of Trustees, had previously cut ties with the school in 2018.
“Recently, we had the opportunity to meet with John, who has contributed greatly to the university and the Louisville community over many years,” Bradley said, noting that officials have since gained additional insight into the events that led to the split.
Schnatter has maintained that he was baited into using a racial slur and that the incident was used to push him out of the company.
“While we recognize that the decisions made years ago were based on the information available at the time, we have gained a greater perspective of the facts that have emerged since then,” Bradley said. “Considering these developments, UofL now acknowledges the university would have approached the situation differently based on our current understanding and believe the best path forward is to unite in our shared commitment to supporting UofL.”
Bradley added that recent conversations show Schnatter is interested in re-engaging with the university, supports its five-year strategic plan, and aligns with the administration’s vision.
“The University of Louisville is near and dear to my heart. With strong ties to the Brandeis School of Law in my own family and its continued leadership through initiatives like the Mary Byron Center, I look forward to once again supporting the University’s mission and creating meaningful opportunities for Card Nation,” Schnatter said.
