Richmond County deputy apprehended and fired over misusing license plate readers

A Richmond County deputy has been apprehended and fired after allegedly manipulating license plate readers.

On June 25, the Sheriff’s Office conducted a routine audit of its Flock License Plate Reader (LPR) camera system.

According to the sheriff’s office, the audit revealed that a deputy accessed and used the Flock system outside of official law enforcement activities.

The case was turned over to the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Inquiry Division for inquiry.

According to the sheriff’s office, the inquiry revealed that Deputy Jaquarius Yarbrough, who was assigned to the Transportation Division, initiated repeated inquiries regarding at least one license plate over the course of twenty-eight days.

The sheriff’s office claims Yarbrough had no approved law enforcement need to access the Flock system as part of his assigned duties.

Investigators decided that the Flock system was accessed for personal reasons, not for law enforcement purposes.

Yarbrough was arrested and taken to the Charles B. Webster Detention Center. He was charged with the following:

  • Violation of oath of office
  • Prohibition on law enforcement retaining license plate data obtained from automated license plate recognition systems

Yarbrough has also been terminated, according to the sheriff’s office.

“The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is devoted to upholding public trust through accountability and transparency. The sheriff’s office stated that any misuse of law enforcement resources or violation of the public’s confidence would be properly examined and addressed.
