A Galveston County jury convicted a League City man guilty of possessing methamphetamine with the intent to supply, resulting in a 15-year jail sentence.
Jurors recently convicted Cesar Gutierrez Duran Jr. guilty of possessing a controlled substance with the intent to deliver in an amount larger than 4 grams but less than 200 grams.
According to prosecutors, the case arose from an October 2025 arrest by League City Police K-9 Officer Jason Jones, who apprehended Duran on two outstanding criminal warrants from Brazoria County.
Officer Jones discovered many baggies containing methamphetamine, as well as drug paraphernalia, during the search that led to the arrest. According to prosecutors, Duran’s girlfriend inquired about what officers had discovered, to which Duran answered, “work.”
Laboratory testing eventually revealed that the baggies contained a total of 10.5 grams of methamphetamine packed for distribution.
Duran was already out on bond in Galveston County for another narcotics case, in which he was suspected of possessing around 13 grams of methamphetamine.
During the trial, prosecutors Brianna Stark and Quinten McConico introduced testimony from Officer Jones, whose body-worn camera caught Duran going into his pockets before being arrested in an apparent attempt to conceal the drugs.
A Texas Department of Public Safety crime laboratory analyst stated that the methamphetamine was packaged in quantities typically referred to as “8 balls,” which are frequently linked with distribution.
Duran and his girlfriend both testified to being serious methamphetamine users, with Duran claiming he meant to give her some of the drugs.
During closing arguments, prosecutors encouraged jurors to take Duran “at his word,” referring to his claim that the methamphetamine was his “work.”
The jury rendered a guilty judgment after nearly two hours of deliberations on Tuesday morning.
Following his conviction, Duran agreed to a 15-year prison sentence. Prosecutors highlighted that he has previous drug-related offenses.
The Galveston County Criminal District Attorney’s Office praised the League City Police Department’s investigation into the matter.
